Dr. John R Cutcliffe is a former Professor of Mental Health Nursing and owner/operator of a Mental Health Counselling/Consulting company; he has over 30 years’ experience of mental health and counselling services across four countries. He is internationally recognised as an esteemed academic and clinical leader in his field; he is the only mental health professional to have held three prestigious Endowed Research Chairs: The ‘David G. Braithwaite’ Professor of Nursing, University of Texas at Tyler, USA; The ‘Acadia Professorship in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing’, University of Maine, USA; and The ‘Blanke’ Endowed Chair in Nursing Research and Professor, Director: Centre for Nursing Research, Wright State University, Ohio, USA.

He has an extensive track record in leadership and senior administrative roles having served in the executive leadership positions of: Director of Research, Dean of Nursing, Endowed Research Chair(s), and Chair of Nursing. He is also the operated his consulting company for over 15 years has provided consulting services to clinical, educational, non-profits, and federal governments in Canada, Europe, and the USA. Dr. Cutcliffe served in Universities in Britain, Northern Ireland, Canada and the United Sates and he has held Adjunct Appointments at Universities in Portugal, Malta, and Ireland.

 Dr. Cutcliffe has a stellar track record of impactful and significant productivity; having an ‘H’ Index of 47, an I10 index of 110, over 330 publications, 12 books and over $5,000,000 (CAD) dollars in extra mural funding. As of June 2020, his work has been cited more than 8250 times (according to Google Scholar data – July 2020); with the vast majority of these citations being of publications where Dr. Cutclffe was the Primary Author. His work has been translated into numerous languages including: German, Japanese, Dutch, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Korean, Turkish and Italian. His work has significant clinical impact and applicability, with his work on suicide and hope now being embedded in Best Practice documents and provincial policies. His suicide risk assessment instrument, the Nurses Global Assessment of Suicide Risk (Cutcliffe and Barker, 2004) is translated into (at least) six languages and has been used all over the world.

Dr. Cutcliffe has been recognised and honoured by the federal government of Canada and cited as one of the top 20 ‘Research Leaders of Tomorrow’ for his research focusing on hope in mental health care. He has served in numerous national leadership positions including, the national Canadian Representative for the International Association of Suicide Prevention, the Associate Editor of the number one ranked journal in his former discipline (The International Journal of Mental Health Nursing)for ten years, and the Director of the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses: Education and Research division ass well as serving on the boards of eight other health or education focused journals. And in 2012 was invited to join the first international advisory board on Clinical Supervision at Yale University, USA.
